1. Objectives:
The general objective of the project is to promote the right of all children to a basic, good quality education.
The specific objective of the project is to provide the children in remote communities within the province of Battambang the opportunity to access primary education.
The project follows a participatory approach from the planning to the implementation of the activities as it is essential to have the participation of the community. In remote areas where there is no school, the families are not aware of the importance of education and are not used to sending their children to school. In this sense, extensive work on awareness needs to be done with the families prior to starting a new school. Once the partnership with the families is secured, we encourage them to participate in the construction of the school and in all the activities thereafter.
2. Main Activities:
Work will be done to initiate and run Primary schools in areas where there are none, promote the enrollment of children at the beginning of each school year; work with the community to raise the awareness on the importance of the education of their children, and provide a good education opportunity for the children. Also, up to 30 secondary students are supported in order for them to access a better education and finish their studies.
Additionally, the project has a community-based approach, encouraging ownership of the people towards all the activities proposed. Such approach emphasizes the importance of people's participation as a key element toward the relevance of each activity.
As of 2015, 17 schools with over 1,600 Primary-school aged children are already running and providing schooling in 6 remote districts of the Province of Battambang. All schools follow the curricula of the government and in many cases, government teachers are already working as the basis of our ongoing partnership with the Ministry of Education.
The projects’ main activities are:
2.1 The education needs of selected primary and secondary school aged children have been guaranteed in the targeted areas
-Education Services (Primary): In the selected target areas we will run primary schools in order to provide education services to the children living there. We will follow the schedule and curricula of the Ministry of Education. The children will attend our schools from Monday to Friday in morning (7:30 to 11:00 am) and afternoon shifts (1:30 to 4:00 pm).
-Education Services (Secondary): For selected students, those who demonstrate the strongest desire and highest potential to continue their education, we will provide them with scholarships to continue their education at the secondary level school.
2.2 An appropriate learning environment in the targeted Primary schools has been guaranteed
-Schooling Infrastructure Support: All targeted schools will receive proper maintenance, equipment and materials for their normal operation. A search of new areas in need of schools will be conducted continuously and if the appropriate conditions of community participation are found, one new school per year will be opened.
-School Material Support: Considering the harsh economic situation of the families, we will provide a basic school package and uniforms to each student so as to help them with their schooling needs, and we will also provide bicycles to those children who live far away from the schools.
2.3 The nutritional and health status of selected children has been improved
-Hygiene and Environmental Awareness Workshops: Workshops on environmental awareness will be imparted to all students and parents and campaigns to keep the school grounds and classes clean will be continuously carried out.
The lack of hygiene produces diseases that can be easily avoided thanks to a better education. Teachings on good hygiene practices like washing hands, brushing teeth correctly and using clean water will be imparted to all students. Some materials like tooth brushes, tooth paste, soap, shampoo, anti-lice treatments, water filters, etc. will be also provided.
-Food Program and Nutritional Improvement: As a pilot intervention, in one of our schools we will provide children with a nutritious meal in order to understand if this strategy con improve the nutrition and health condition of the children and therefore reduce the absenteeism due to illness. Children will also be weighted at the beginning and end of each school year to ascertain their growth.
2.4 The community involvement in the school has been organized
-Raising Education Awareness: The importance of the participation of parents in the activities is crucial for the development of the project so we will work with the community from the very beginning in order to get their consent on the activities of the school and encourage their participation. We will continuously discuss with them about the problems and challenges faced and will try to find common solutions. At the time of building new schools, we will ask the parents to provide a small contribution for the school construction so that they are also aware they form part of the future of the school and their children’s education.
Additionally, as most parents in rural areas are not aware of the importance of the education of their children and in many instances do not care to send them to school, we will continuously raise the awareness on this issue. Also, as children are sometimes encouraged to work at an early age to start receiving a salary to help their families, we will have different meetings with the parents and school teachers to discourage this practice and we will support each student in 6th grade with 10kgs of rice a month. This small contribution can be equivalent to what the child would be providing to the family in economic/food terms and it will serve as an encouragement to the parents to send their children to school as they would also be benefited.
2.5 The quality of teaching has been continuously promoted
-Teachers’ Training and Support: To obtain a good quality education, it is crucial to have a high degree of pedagogical skills from our teachers. Many times however most teachers have been unable to finish Secondary education given economic or structural reasons. For this, every year we will organize a seminar for our teachers in the Apostolic Prefecture of Battambang in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. These seminars will last at least 3 days where the teachers will share their activities with qualified professors and learn teaching techniques.
Before starting to collaborate with our schools, the teachers taught their classes without any kind of remuneration. Their only motivation was that the children would have the opportunity to learn and benefit from a better future. Unfortunately, this situation forced them to find additional sources of income and did not allow them to dedicate themselves exclusively to teaching. We will provide the teachers a decent incentive and a support in the form of rice (25kg a month) so that they will be able to maintain their families and focus on the job of being teachers.
3. Affected Communities / Beneficiaries: The beneficiaries of the project are children of primary school age and their families that live in remote villages of the province of Battambang, villages that find themselves in the remote areas.
