A training farm for rice cultivation in Cambodia, which is promoted by the Diözese Rottenburg-Stuttgart, offers small farmers new opportunities for greater economic independence. Since 2018, the World Church Department has been working together with the Karuna Battambang Organization, which supports this project, and supports their work in the rural areas of Battambang/Cambodia.
A large part of Cambodia's population still earns its livelihood from rice cultivation, although rural exodus is a major problem in this country as well. The reasons for this are low earning opportunities in the agricultural sector and the effects of climatic changes. One of many steps in this direction was the construction of a storage room in which the harvested rice can be stored until the world market price makes it worth selling. Where farmers used to be exposed to market and wholesale pressure, they can now decide for themselves when the time is right to sell. A meeting room for meetings and training sessions was added to the warehouse, as well as a café and a sales room for the company's own products, centrally located on a busy road. In addition, a training farm was established, where farmers are trained in the ecological and sustainable cultivation of rice. In this way it is possible to increase yields and to grow them without the use of chemical sprays or fertilizers, which in turn has an effect on the quality of the soil and the surrounding environment. The local people are confident and can rely on the solidarity of the main department of the World Church. Each family received 50 kilograms of rice, one piece of noodle, 2 pieces of can fish, 2 kilograms of dried fish, 2 pieces of soy sauce, 4 pieces of Protex soap and 3 pieces of paracetamol. May 19th to June 5th, 2020: KBO support kits emergency response on Covid-19 pandemic impact on the vulnerable families and affected communities in Battambang, Buntiey Meanchei, and Pursat province. These packages humanitarian aid and hygiene were delivered to 562 vulnerable families in Outreach and Anatha project). Each package contains 25 kilos of rice, 10 cans of fish cans, 6 bottles of soy sauce, 6 bottles of fish sauce, 1 big case of instant noodles, 1 liter of cooking oil, 5 toothpaste, face mask and 8 pieces of bar soap. Together we can get out of this situation. We work every day for it! 30 families live in the Battambang garbage dump, recycling plastic and metal received emergency support from Anatha project of KBO. Due to the current situation of alarm by the pandemic of Covid-19, the recycling companies have stopped buying material and these families have been left without their only income. A request for aid was then issued to NGOs, and our Anatha team organized an activity for this group. April 08th, 2020, they went to the garbage dump and distributed rice, non-perishable food, and hygiene materials to each of the families. This workshop is help every three months per time to reflect on what each child with intellectual disability reached to their annual plans. As the result of this workshop, it is the most important mechanism to increase staff capacity and strengthening on how to assess the clients with physical issues , set up planning for treatment and get the new methodologies as well as intervention to remove on those issues.
